Burundi - Hafi Natural
Region: Muyinga Province, Burundi
Variety: Arabica – Bourbon
Altitude: 1715 MASL
Process: Natural
About this lot: "Hafi" means "Near" in the Burundi language of Kirundi. The coffee from this group of producers within the Muyinga Province of Northeast Burundi was given this name because of their desire for access to a wet mill for processing, something that currently is over a day’s travel from where they are which makes it logistically unreasonable to produce washed coffees. However, this dilemma paved the way for innovation and adaptation to master the art of natural and anaerobic processing, which they have absolutely done.
Sourcing Info: This is our debut harvest working with JNP Coffee in Burundi. JNP is owned by Jeanine Niyonzima-Aroian. Jeanine grew up in Bujumbura, Burundi's largest city, where she recalled hearing her mother tell stories about how her family cultivated coffee in the Ngozi Province to pay their way through school. She had a very successful academic and business career, earning an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, outside of Chicago. Her successes and her business endeavors internationally would ultimately lead her back home to Burundi where she now advocates for coffee producers and their communities.
