Our friends over at Collaborative Origins Imports, formerly known as Yepocapa Coffee, introduced our team to Max Perez this past year. We were blown away by Max's attention to detail and his excellence in producing and processing coffees. Our first coffee of Max's was his naturally processed pacamara coffee, which had taken 9th place in Guatemala's Cup of Excellence competition a few years back. He has continued to enter into the competition, and places in the top tier each harvest.
While Max can produce an excellent, unique micro-lot, he can also grow organic washed coffees with that same attention to detail and desire for excellence. This is our first year offering this organic washed coffee from Finca La Hermosa, Max's farm, and it certainly won't be our last. We're actually planning to visit Max and his family in Guatemala during harvest in 2023. We can't wait to further connect with Max and his family!
On Finca La Hermosa from the Importer, Yepocapa Coffee:
"Max Perez is a 5th generation coffee farmer. He and his family are originally from Huehuetenango and have a family farm there that is run by his father. 10 years ago, Max and wife had an opportunity to buy an abandoned farm that has since become Finca La Hermosa.
Since the farm had been abandoned for a significant amount of time, everything needed to be renovated. Plants were pulled up, fields were tilled, raked, and maintained, shade trees were planted, and the construction of a wet mill ensued. This amount of investment is actually quite risky. Since the coffee market is super volatile and doesn’t always offer profit margins, farmers who make investments like that are often driven by something more than profit margins... It’s what I really admire about Max... It’s a farm we’re really proud to represent and a farmer we’re even more excited about. His coffees are stellar but his personality and character is what drives us to want to continue supporting him year after year."
