Our relationship with the Perez family and their stunning estate, Finca La Hermosa, began in 2021. We were captivated by Max and Claudia's penchant for sustainable organic farming practices and their ability to constantly innovate, in a constant pursuit of better coffee.
Max and Claudia Pérez, fresh out of graduating from Law School in Guatemala, purchased an abandoned farm in Acatenango, Guatemala in 2011, which is now the home of Finca La Hermosa. The farm is an award winning, organic coffee farm and birthplace of this exceptional coffee. The Pérez family name has been growing coffee for five generations in Huehuetenango where Max was born. It is safe to say that coffee has been a part of his life since birth and with this rich familial history of coffee farming Max is making a name for himself and in his own way within Finca La Hermosa. We try our best to have this coffee available year round but as more and more customers fall in love with it as much as we have, that is an increasingly difficult thing to pull off.
More on Finca La Hermosa from our friend and importer Ryan, of Collaborative Origin Imports:
"Max and wife had an opportunity to buy an abandoned farm that has since become Finca La Hermosa.
Since the farm had been abandoned for a significant amount of time, everything needed to be renovated. Plants were pulled up, fields were tilled, raked, and maintained, shade trees were planted, and the construction of a wet mill ensued. This amount of investment is actually quite risky. Since the coffee market is super volatile and doesn’t always offer profit margins, farmers who make investments like that are often driven by something more than profit margins... It’s what I really admire about Max... It’s a farm we’re really proud to represent and a farmer we’re even more excited about. His coffees are stellar but his personality and character is what drives us to want to continue supporting him year after year."
