About this lot: This sweet and clean washed lot comes from the Cankuzo province, a region of Burundi that is just across the border from Tanzania. This is a rural region of Burundi, far from any major cities. In this growing region women producers and farmworkers are highly valued and hold leadership positions like Head of Production and Head of Quality, something that would be considered more unusual in other growing regions within the country.
Sourcing Info: This is our debut harvest working with JNP Coffee in Burundi. JNP is owned by Jeanine Niyonzima-Aroian. Jeanine grew up in Bujumbura, Burundi's largest city, where she recalled hearing her mother tell stories about how her family cultivated coffee in the Ngozi Province to pay their way through school. She had a very successful academic and business career, earning an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, outside of Chicago. Her successes and her business endeavors internationally would ultimately lead her back home to Burundi where she now advocates for coffee producers and their communities.
From JNP Coffee: " Our business model is driven by quality coffee based on strong producer partnerships and shared knowledge in pursuit of several United Nations sustainable development goals. JNP Coffee encourages transformational change for local coffee farmers by promoting gender equality, supporting financial literacy education and developing leadership skills. These efforts to empower the farmers and their families build resilience and expand their coffee production capacity. "
